Controlling your Dreamself
The starting point for any lucid dream is being able to control your own actions within the dream. You will probably find you are immediately able to do this as soon as you are lucid. In rare cases where you find yourself lucid but not able to control your dream self, try clearly spelling out each of your desired actions like you are the director or narrator of your dream.
Example: If you want to pick up the ball next to you, and are unable to just reach out and pick up, say “I want to pick up the ball”, you will often find your dream self follows this instruction. Don’t worry about this getting tedious, you usually only have to do this for a few commands before your dreamself catches up with your intentions, and you get full control of the body just like when you are awake.
Flying
Technically this is part of self control, it is just an action you want your dream self to do, but it is such a common theme of lucid dreaming it deserves its own section! The other reason flying is slightly different to the standard aspects of self control is it isn’t something you can do in your waking life (talk about stating the obvious). Because of this most people don’t have an intuitive sense of what it should feel like, and so it can seem trickier to pull off.
The good news is that our mind still has lots of examples to call on from TV and films. Whether you go for an explosive superman technique, strapping on jetpack, a floating levitation style, growing a pair of wings, or swimming through the air, any of these and more are good.
If you have trouble with one style, try another. A good way to increase the effectiveness of any flying technique is to have a clear conception of how it works. For example you might decide the reason you can fly is because you are using directing chi through your body down to the ground, or that you know how to manipulate magnetic fields or maybe creating a magic bubble around your body that floats in the air. Whatever you choose, having a clear picture of how your flying technique works will improve your control over it.
